Technical Details

  • Features powerful 15 amp motor and dual post compound pivoting arm
  • Provides a large capability with cuts 52 degrees right and 47 degrees left with 9 positive stops at 15, 22-1/2, 30, 45 degrees left or right and 0 degrees
  • Durably designed with a machined aluminum base, dual aluminum base, dual slide rails, and a carbide tip blade
  • Saw includes vertical vise, blade, wrench, triangular rule, and 2 extension wings
  • Covered by 1-year warranty

A favorite on job sites, Makita's 10-inch compound miter saw has a highly dedicated following. Even though it's extremely portable (at 24.2 pounds), Makita's saw also boasts a super sturdy dual-post pivoting arm. A pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw bevels left up to 45 degrees and miters 45 degrees left and up to 52 degrees right. There's no lack of power here, either: a 15 amp motor spins the blade, plus there's an electric brake that saves you time between cuts. There's also a shaft lock that makes changing blades quick and easy. The miter has a smooth-action swivel, but the lock is of the older screw-handle design that's a little more time-consuming than the newer (and more expensive) cam-lock designs. This Makita also lacks a soft-start mechanism, so it does jump a bit when the motor first engages; some users swear by a soft start, but we think a saw can still be a high-quality saw without one. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. And the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle. Our verdict: it's a solid saw. -- Jon Groebner

Choosing a Miter Saw
Miter saws are versatile tools that have become a mainstay of workshops everywhere. These powerful saws make angled cuts by pulling a circular blade down onto a workpiece with a short, controlled plunge. It might appear that miter saws are infinitely complex and varied, but there are only three general types. The type you choose will depend on your woodworking needs.

Basic Miter Saws
Basic miter saws are the least versatile off the three major variations, but they’re a great starting point for novice do-it-yourselfers. These models typically adjust for miter cuts only, so consider upgrading if you need to do more than that.

Compound miter saws are easier to use than basic miter saws because you can place your stock flat for cutting, and they adjust simultaneously for miter and bevel cuts. A compound miter saw is great for jobs that feature stock that's not very tall or wide, such as door and window trim or picture frames.

Sliding Compound Miter Saws
Sliding compound miter saws are the most versatile of the available models. They have a motor and blade assembly that's mounted on a moveable arm to accommodate longer, wider workpieces. For smaller pieces, the saw performs like an ordinary fixed-head model. On some models, the blade can only pivot in one direction, but on a dual sliding compound miter saw, the blade can tilt to the right or left.

Important Features at a Glance
Though models will vary by manufacturer and design, these are a few of the more commonly found features that you might want to keep in mind.

  • Electric brake: Reverses the flow of electricity when the saw's trigger is released. This is an important safety feature that slows the blade quickly in case of emergency.
  • Blade guard: Most miter saws have self-retracting guards that withdraw when the saw is lowered for use, and reappear when it is raised.
  • Laser guide: Gives a precise visual line where the cut will occur on your workpiece.
  • Dust bag: Helps collect sawdust for a clearer, more tidy cutting area.
  • Shaft lock: Immobilizes the shaft and blade for quicker, easier blade changes.
  • Table extensions: Mount on either side of the saw to help balance longer workpieces.

Miter Saw Blades
Miter saw blades come in a variety of different sizes, grades, and materials, but there are three main types: steel, high-speed steel, and carbide-tipped blades.

  • Steel: Inexpensive and good for cutting soft woods or plywoods. Sharpness diminishes quickly in tougher materials.
  • High-Speed Steel: More rugged than steel blades, and great for cutting harder woods.
  • Carbide-Tipped: More expensive than other blades but much more durable. Maintain sharpness over a longer period.

    From the Manufacturer
Features bevel cuts up to 45-degrees left, miter cuts 0-45-degrees left and right, powerful 15 amp motor, adjustable fence, and shaft lock for easy blade changes. Includes: dust bag, wrench and blade. Weighs 24.2-pounds.

Product Description

From the Manufacturer
The Milwaukee 6955-20 12” Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw features a miter angle fine adjust with detent override which makes it simple to dial-in precise miter angles. This allows the user to quickly adjust for a non-square environment. The fine adjust allows for single hand operation; (1) hand on material, (1) hand making fine adjustment. The miter angle fine adjust features a self zeroing system and it works on the ENTIRE miter angle range. Also features dual integral jobsite lights that fully illuminate the work piece and cut line from either side of the blade. This makes it easier for the user to see the blade enter the material. It also eliminates the hassle of buying and setting up independent lighting. These lights are especially beneficial on pre-finished millwork. The Milwaukee 6955-20 12” Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw also features an electronic soft start that allows the carpenter to sneak up on the cut line without damaging material. The blade takes less than two seconds to get up to full speed, but that makes all the difference in ensuring a smooth start. The Milwaukee 6955-20 12” Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw has a motor that features constant power technology which provides constant speed under load. The RPM (3,250) of the blade is the same at both no load and during loaded cutting. This ensures a quick, clean cut even in hardwood materials. The Milwaukee 6955-20 12” Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw contains an integral dust channel that captures up to 75% of the dust and debris cut by capturing dust near the cut on both sides of the blade and directing it to the back of the saw. This maximizes airflow and allows waste to flow through the back elbow and into waste container. The result in the Best Dust Collection in the Industry! This saw has an oversized single lever bevel adjustment with (9) positive bevel stops which allows the saw to easily bevel left and right 0 degrees – 48 degrees

Product Description
Amazon.com Review
This is what a miter saw ought to be: accurate, sturdy, powerful, versatile, user-friendly and packed full of cool features.

If we had to choose a favorite aspect, it would have to be the handle. It’s vertical. It’s horizontal. And it’s a couple of other things in between. It locks quickly and easily into any of four positions, so both lefties and righties have complete comfort and control.

This saw is beefy: It weighs in at 55 pounds and it’s got a huge 25-1/2-inch base with built-in sliding extensions that bring your total support area to 40 inches. If you’re in the market for a stand for this saw as well, we like both the Bosch TracRac as well as the DeWalt DW723.

The dual bevel is a great feature, swinging 0 to 47 degrees left and zero to 46 degrees right, with positive bevel stops at 31.6 and 33.9 degrees for flawless crown molding cuts. For miter cuts, the blade swings an impressive 52 degrees left and right. There’s even a micro-fine adjustment here, letting you override a detent by as much as 2 degrees. Now that’s precision.

We absolutely love the fence on this saw – Bosch calls it a Speed-track sliding fence – because it’s a full 4 inches tall and has a beautifully readable inch-scale on it. It’s perfect for crown molding, handling pieces up to 6 inches wide when angled against the fence.

We’re suddenly rethinking our earlier statement about our favorite feature on this saw; on second thought, it might well be that all the controls – including the bevel lever – are up front. We’re pretty tired of reaching around a saw body to set a bevel, so this is a most welcome upgrade. Adjustments are so much faster and easier, and all the scales are right up front, too.

Capacities are generous for a non-slider. With a 0-degree miter and 45-degree right bevel, you can cut a 2-by-6; beveling to the left, it will handle a 2-by-8. With an upright blade, you’ll cut a 4-by-4 with ease.

And yes, this saw has a laser cutting guide, but unless you really want one, we wouldn’t let that sway a decision on this saw one way or the other. It’s a nice feature if you’re likely to use it, but most of us woodworkers prefer to get a visual on exactly where that blade meets the wood.

In all, this is a beauty of a saw, with features you aren’t going to find on other saws in its class. And we still can’t pick our favorite between the handle and the up-front controls. It’s all good.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Product Description

The Robert Bosch Tool Corporation enjoys a well-earned reputation for producing high-quality, well-engineered power tools. And we're glad to report that the new Bosch 5412L 12-inch dual-bevel sliding compound miter saw is no exception. This remarkable tool combines unrivaled speed and power with impressive cutting capabilities. It’s also loaded with several innovative, user-friendly features, such as a laser that indicates exactly where the blade will cut. So, whether you’re a professional contractor or a serious do-it-yourselfer, the 5412L will handle virtually any cut, including square crosscuts, miter cuts, bevel cuts and compound angle cuts. In fact, the only type of cut this saw can’t make is a rip cut, but that’s true of any power miter saw.

The saw’s large 12-inch blade, powerful 3-horsepower motor and dual slide rail permits crosscutting boards up to 4-1/2 inches thick by 12 inches long. When set for a 45-degree miter-cut, it’ll cut up to 4 inches thick by 8-1/2 inches long. At a 45-degree bevel, the saw’s capacity is 2-3/4 inches by 12 inches. And when you set both the miter and bevel angles for a compound cut, the saw will cut up to 2-3/4 inches by 8-1/2 inches. This is the ideal tool for installing crown molding. It’ll cut crown up to 12 inches wide when the molding is laid flat on the worktable, and up to 6 inches wide when it’s held at an angle against the saw fence.

The 5412L also features convenient up-front adjustments of all bevel and miter settings, a four-position handle, work hold-down clamps, two sliding fences, dust-collection bag, and built-in sliding extensions that support boards up to 40 inches long. The motor is equipped with an electric brake that stops the blade within a split second of releasing the trigger. At 59 pounds, this isn’t the most portable miter saw on the market, but that small drawback is more than compensated by this tool’s superior performance and innovative features. -- Joseph Truini

Hitachi’s redo of the well-built C10FS took a great saw and made it better. Laser cutting line? Done. Taller fence? Done. More legible scales? Done. The soft-start, belt-driven, 12-amp motor reduces vibration, and you get the same impeccably smooth ride on the slide that its predecessor offered, thanks to Hitachi’s linear ball-bearing system. At a mere 44 pounds, it’s a great contractor saw for job site work, trimming studs, crown molding, plywood, decorative veneer and hardboard, even aluminum sash materials--and unlike other saws, it bevels left and right. This Hitachi is dead-on accurate every time, with a smooth action and comfortable, secure grip. Our favorite update to this saw is undoubtedly the laser cutting line--who wouldn’t want that? It’s a little spendy for the average home woodworking hobbyist, but with tools, you really do get what you pay for.-- Kris Jensen-Van Heste
